Annual Free Credit Report Available As Of 12/1/04

Since our credit scores have become such a big part of our lives, it has become federal law that everyone be able to get a free credit report annually. As of December 1st, 2004, the western states are eligible and the web site lists when other groups of states will have access. For a blow-by-blow, check out the write-up on the Personal Finance Blog.

Ironically Chris, the "free" reports you can get don't include your credit score. You have to pay extra for that. All you get for free is a listing of the information used to create the score, not the score itself.

BTW, in exchange for your credit listing, the credit reporting agencies get your contact information and are allowed to turn around and start marketing to you. I am sure the mailing-lists this creates will be some of the most valuable around. So much for "free".

Feh. Every time I've tried to use this I get a "we can't offer this report online, so [insert some fax and/or mail in a form blurb] - thanks!"

Ah well - I'll just wait and be surprised when I go for my next mortgage!

Great - the one time I don't mind being part of "the south", NC ends up being grouped with the "eastern states" which are dead-last in being able to get their free report... oh well...

btw regarding the fact that you don't get your credit score: I assume the reason behind this law is so people can detect incorrect information, identity theft, etc. Knowing your score won't help you do that...
