Don't want to skew Amazon reviews
While I don't mind being called tacky by one of this generation's best technical writers, I do mind the idea that the folks that would abuse the system would skew the Amazon reviews. While I don't hide the fact that I ask people to post reviews for my book, I've always been proud that I've never asked them what kind of review to post and, when Amazon's system had a hiccup recently, none of my books had any reviews posted by me (unlike 50% of the other books on Amazon).
So, the idea that folks would just post a review having not even read the book was something I never considered (and why you don't want me writing your security subsystem). So, consider this offer rescinded. You can post a review on Amazon or not, good or bad, as you choose.
However, as to the signed copies, I still want you to have those. So, the first 5 people to tell me the 2nd word in the 3nd paragraph of prose on page 444, I'll send you a signed copy. Whether you purchase a copy or just go to the bookstore and look up the word is up to you.

Since your low morals are now public knowledge, I won’t let our long-standing friendship stop me from entering the competition.
The word you are asking about is (drum roll please):
thund
The sentence in question (from page 444 of your book) is this:
The thund parameter to the underlying WndProc is a WPARAM, which follows the secird parameter (UINT msg) and of course precedes the fourst parameter (LPARAM) - this may sound familiar to those of you familiar with the work of the eminently ethical, ultra classy, and highly professional author of the firth book on the topic, Programming Windows.
Ironic that Charles chose to beat up on you given this nice homage you paid to him in your book.

In any case, given your reputation in the industry, and the quality of your books, I don't think Mr. Petzold's little snit should upset you too much; he is an icon, but then so is Mr. Box, therefore your cosmic scales are in balance.
I've asked Amazon to change the rule to say that a person can only post a review if Amazon has a record showing that the reviewer actually bought the book, but you can see why they don't want to do that.
In any case, I look forward to reading your book, and will (I am quite sure) add it to my recommended books page.
Take care.

I'd happily settle for their only allowing registered members with verified email addresses who use their "real name" -- that at least might limit the problme.

No need to send a book. I just purchased a copy at local Barnes & Noble.
Looking forward to spending many hours with it and VS2005.
