Stange But Real Facts

I don't know how many of these are actually real (my left-handed son was very disappointed to hear that he'd be dying 9 years before his right-handed brother), but they were very fun to read with the kids.

P.S. Can you lick your elbow? Tom claims to have a friend that can lick his. He's going to be very popular when he grows up...

Dave:

I cannot lick my elbo, but my sister can but she's a bit double jointed. She can also clasp her hands behind her back (one over her shoulder and one twisted back and up, it hurts me to watch ;-)

I guess there should be many lies here. I am from Sri Lanka and the claim in line 36 is wrong. As in any other place, side to side shaking of head is "no". No strange people are here :)

Among the others:
#20 - Snopes has an article on that. Bottom line: True at one time, but now outdated.

#47 - I think this is a misunderstanding of the details. I believe the "sleeping" rate of calorie burning is the natural rate your body burn fuel just existing, and everything thing else is the number of calories OVER that the activity burns. So, it would be more accurate to say "Watching TV burn less than twice as many calories than doing nothing" but that's not as impressive sounding.
#54 - The Straight Dope discussed that one, offer as shorter sentences "No", "Who?" and "I"
#78 - That's true, but it should be noted that it's believed that the inventor of the typewriter arranged the keys that way, so his salesmen could quickly type "TYPEWRITER" during a demo.
#82 - Definitely not true. The best suggested reason for saying "God Bless You" is that sneezing is a symptom of the Plauge.
#88-#90 - The "Rule" is far more popular with tour guides than with scultors, who carve stautes the way they think looks best rather than according to some silly "rule"

Aaron:

The actual reason for the letter layout had to do with Frank Gilbreth, Sr. He was a motion efficiency expert (there is actually a book about him, Cheaper by the Dozen, and a movie that shares the same name only starring Steve Martin), and was hired to study the motion of typewriting and figure out a way to make it more efficient. He devised an advanced keyboard layout which increased typing efficiency significantly. So much, in fact, that it had to be modified slightly to cause *slower* typing because the hammers that would strike the letters on the page were moving so fast that they would get caught on each other.
