There once was a man from Duluth

nearly 40 years old; past his youth!
But tonight with a smile,
he swam non-stop for a mile.
First time in his life - that's the truth!

I swam a mile when I was 17 and again last summer, but never non-stop before. I know it doesn't compare to real swimmers (it took me 45 minutes), but I've been swimming for less than a year. Plus i found two meaningful rhymes for "Duluth." I rock. : )

Congrats! Now you need to come up with a rhyme for "I'm half the man I used to be." :)

Of course, vermouth came to mind immediately as in:

after his youth
and foresaking vermouth
which, though thought uncouth,
he swam for a mile
and, drying off with a smile,
was the hottest man at the kissing booth.

Hey Chris - congrats on your long swim! And you're looking great, man. Here's to your health :)

I've always wanted to learn how to do the front crawl, but every time I try, I'm afraid I'm going to suck water.

Know of any resources I should check out?

*The* book on swimming is "Total Immersion" by Terry Laughlin, but I'd recommend some private lessons first from someone that knows the basics. You can sign up for a swimming class at your local community college or from your health club. Even easier is 30 minutes in the pool with someone that's had lessons. I never had any formal lessons, but I grew up in the land of 10,000 lakes -- it was swim or drown there. : )

I remember when you swam a mile. Fortunately, you weren't yet with the troop when I swam, canoed, ran and then puked up a chicken dinner.

Not my best rhyme...but this is more in line with the current state of Minnesota.

There once was a man from Duluth
almost long in the tooth
He went for a swim
When the light was too dim
And just laid on the ice, forsooth!

An elderly gent from Fargo
(not risking his roommate's embargo)
was removing snow from the roof
when he fell and went "Oof!"
and seriously injured his lumbargo.

Should have gone swimming instead. Marvelous achievement; is the English channel next?

Sure. After 1 mile of smooth, indoor, heated pool water I’m ready for 20 miles of ocean...

Scooter -- all that exercise right after a full chicken dinner? That was an intelligence test... How'd you do? : )

I was young and doing a mini-Scouting marathon with a belly full of grease created over a Boy Scout fire in a somewhat-clean Boy Scout fry pan. You know how clean those fry pans are. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Of course, RAGBRAI and pancakes seems fine nowadays, and that's probably pushing it as well.

Congratulations on the mile, by the way. That's a serious achievement at just under 40.
