Oslo May 2009 CTP Available Now

The May 2009 CTP of "Oslo" available on the Developer Center contains a new unified setup, an Intellipad with an integrated DSL authoring mode, the UML domain and the CLR domain, a slimmed-down SDK with the samples and the documents available on the DevCenter, a unified tool set for the "M" language and, the one that folks have been most anticipating, Quadrant.

For more details about what's new, check out the letter from Kraig and Kent and the release notes. Also, in the coming weeks and months, Kraig and Kent have a pipeline of content for the DevCenter to keep you informed about how we're using "Oslo" and how you can use it better. If you've got suggestions, please use the Connect site and don't hesitate to post your questions on the forum.

Enjoy!

When i tried opening up the grammar that i had developed using the Jan CTP, in Intellipad (May CTP) and tried parsing it using the 3 pane mode, it threw OutofMemory exception. The memory usage of ipad.exe shot up to like 1.5GB!! It was a grammar file with around 600 lines. Have you come across any such issue/limitation?

That's a bug, Krishna. Can you post it, along with your sample grammar file, on the Connect site?

Thanks for the quick response, Chris. I have logged a bug on Connect for the same: https://connect.microsoft.com/oslo/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=461087

Not sure about this but I feel that the heavy consumption of memory has something to do with long names or values of tokens/syntax. I hope this issue gets fixed ASAP as this is a show stopper for us.

Sorry about that, Krishna. I've asked my brethren on the team to take a quick look to see if there's a work around. Don't want you to be blocked!

Probably not the best forum, but I am stuck...

I have been using Jan CTP. We had an mg file that would get compiled and embedded as a resource. DynamicParser would be created from it.

Since the MSBuild targets file has changed the project file needs to be changed. I am not sure how to go about that. Any sample?

Furthermore, I am not finding how I can produce an mgx file and that can consumed from DynamicParser.LoadFromMGX. Any help or a pointer in the right direction? Thanks.

Sanin, "Oslo" questions should posted on the forum:

I was correct, Krishna -- that's a bug. A work-around has been posted:

In summary, try using shorter identitiers for now. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Thanks for your quick response, Chris. So is the problem coming up due to the number of characters in the token name or the value? If we use shorter identifiers, i guess we are compromising on the readability of the grammar. Anyways I will check out whether it works for us! But i think this is a serious limitation, which was not there in the Jan CTP. When can we expect a fix for this?

I hope it'll be fixed by the PDC in November.

Thanks. Can you please clarify whether the issue is cropping up due to the use of longer token names or is it because of longer values specified for tokens?

Chris Sells:

Krishna, can you follow up in the bug itself? That way everyone can see. Thanks!

This is further to the workaround you guys suggested when I posted the bug - https://connect.microsoft.com/oslo/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=461087.

Now i have shorter token names, but when i try to open the grammar file in Intellipad (May CTP), it first of all takes a long time to parse the grammar and finally it throws a ArgumentNullException. Really not sure as to why this is happening.

I have put this issue on the connect site: https://connect.microsoft.com/oslo/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=463473

Any help on this would be appreciated!

Chris, i didn't get any replies from you for my previous comment. Can you please let me know why thats happening? This is a blocking issue for us and if we don't get a workaround for this problem we would have to go back to the Jan CTP :(.Please help!!!
