"MP3s Are Not the Devil," by Orson Scott Card

Here. One of my favorite authors speaks out on a controversial topic.

And this is a guy who actually believes in the Devil, too.

Sorry, but the "the record companies are screwing the artists and ripping us off" argument just doesn't impress me...whether it's coming from a friend or an esteemed writer like Orson Scott Card.

Card mentions that publishers attempted to strong-arm authors into signing "work for hire" agreements. Would that then justify people copying those publishers' books wholesale and sharing them on the internet (assuming, of course, that a similarly simple copying method was available)? I don't think so.

Like Card, I earn much of my living on intellectual property, and I don't buy 90% of the arguments in favor of internet "music sharing". In my view, it's theft. If you want to do it anyway, at least be honest about it, rather than trying to tart it up as justice for the "rapacious" record companies.

Well, the record companies are mean, but I still agree with you. It's theft.

Card doesn't use the "record companies are screwing the artists and ripping us off" argument to justify file sharing; instead, he just points out that it's ironic to hear them complain about being screwed. In fact, I'm not sure I saw any arguments *for* file sharing in the article. Certainly he's laying the groundwork for it, but given what I read, I'd be surprised if he was a supporter of the free-for-all model that currently exists.
