BankOne: Special Victims Unit

I have a BankOne Visa card that I use for Sells Brothers, Inc. as a charge card for expenses like computer equipment, technical book purchases and strip clubs (you know -- business expenses : ). Apparently somebody got a hold of the number and started making charges with it today. A $19 charge was approved, but the $331 charge swung the BankOne AI software into action and the charge was declined. They called right away to confirm the activity and when I didn't recognize it, they credited me the $19, canceled the card, put a new one in the mail, sent all three major credit card agencies a notice so that my credit rating wouldn't be affected and put an affidavit in the mail so that I could swear that the $19 charge wasn't mine. All of this defense against identity theft cost me 5 minutes on the phone, a few days wait while I receive my new card, a signature and $0. Amazing.

I had the same experience a few months ago. I think my number was stolen while I was in Asia, and FirstUSA/Bank One caught the fraud immediately (much bigger purchase - $2000 worth of electronics in Japan) and took care of everything within a few days.

My Alaska Airlines Visa has a similar protection. Of course I'm always triggering it. For example, this Christmas, we're going to Alaska followed by Japan. I just know my card will get frozen a couple times as I make big purchase in three different places in a span of two weeks.

as apposed to U.S. Bank who will immediately dispatch someone to your house to punch you in the nuts then stand there and laugh at you.

or maybe I'm the exception...

I guess the Dominican Republic is home to a bunch of fraud problems. Every time my wife and I are there, we go to pay for something and the charge is declined...

While in most cases this is useful, I wish I could call my credit card company and tell them that I'm going to be somewhere for a while, so expect charges...

You can.

I had a friend who got a new bank account and just saved up money in it for a year and a half preparing for a trip to Europe. Never during this time did she make a withdrawl on the account. After the second purchase in England, her card stopped working and had to call and let them know that she really was in Europe for a couple months.

I use Bank one as well. While yes this is great I had a lot of mixed emotions when this happened to me. I was out of town, not far 30 miles, was about out of gas and had like $2 on me. Only Card I had at the time was my Bank One. Went to get Gas, card rejected at the pump. SO here I am 30 miles from home no gas, no money. Since then i got an additional card. A Master Card. I use very rarely. and then keep $100 hidden in my wallet. in the "it's not easy to get to pocket." While I know it could have been much worse if they hadn't caught it. What an inconvenience it can be to be stranded like that with no cash around. It is good to have friends in that situation at least my cell phone worked. So always keep a little cash hidden for emergencies.

BankOne uses ASP.NET!

"...but the $331 charge swung the BankOne AI software into action and the charge was declined."

Oh, GREAT.

Now I'm going to have to find a different way of buying myself that dining set.

And to *think* that I was going to invite you and Melissa over to take it on its maiden voyage.

Yeah. Thanks a *pantload*, Sells.

Thanks *ever so much*, Chris "I'm so cold hearted that I won't even let my friends take my stolen credit card number on a spending spree" Sells.

I work as a contractor to JPMC (recently merged with BankOne)--and I know they are heavily invested in MS technologies, both internally and externally hosted.

I had some charges on my CC a while back to some porn page that a guy on Yahoo stole. I had the email address and everything, but the CC company told me all I could do was talk to CCBill.com, who told me I had to file police report to get a subpeona on their IP records, but the police never even got back with me. So in my experience thus far, CC's identity fraud protection and liability policies suck the proverbial ass.

Especially if you lean left and believe in putting your money where your politics are.

There are other benefits to using Bank1One, Wednesday, September 29, 2004 10:02 PM

What triggered the $331 charge decline?
It can't be just the amount.

I've had this happen twice. I now have 3 credit cards: #1 I only ever use in person, #2 I only use over the internet, #3 I only use overseas. Any usage pattern different from this triggers the SVU. It also helps having a unique last name (only my immediate family).

John Wolnisty, Thursday, September 30, 2004 8:19 AM

Was it because the $331 didn't come from a strip club, that's why it was flagged?

DCD, Thursday, September 30, 2004 9:43 AM

Who uses a credit card at a strip club? Cash baby. Cash!

nospamplease75@yahoo.com (Haacked), Thursday, September 30, 2004 4:24 PM

^_^ What, you weren't aware that the good strip clubs now include an ATM that dispenses in $1 bills? And you can get cash advances...
